Why TNC Engages in
Fire Management
Operating Assumptions

Welcome to The Nature Conservancy's Fire Management Manual. The Conservancy engages in wildland fire management across the United States and in several other countries. Staff and volunteers participate in a broad range of fire management activities, from planning, to prescribed fire, wildfire suppression, and monitoring fire effects. We engage in these activities in collaboration with partner organizations, private landowners, and governmental agencies. Currently, the Conservancy controlled burns about 100,000 acres each year on our own land, and directly assists partners in applying prescribed fire on an additional 150,000 acres.

The Manual serves as the Conservancy's guiding document on all aspects of wildland fire management. It is divided into six key sections: introduction, administration and insurance, personnel, requirements and guidelines, planning, and safety. The Manual is a dynamic document, and changes are made as the need arises. About the Manual provides information on most recent updates, citation, a downloadable PDF version, and contact information.

More information on fire-related conservation and The Nature Conservancy can be found at Fire & Landscapes and on nature.org - Fire as a Conservation Method.
